NEW PDC RANKINGS SYSTEM

With the first tournament of the 2002 ranking calendar looming this weekend in Eastbourne, the time seems right to explain the details of the new PDC ranking system.
The new system, which came into place at the conclusion of the 2002 Skol World Championships, sees the following changes come into place.

1. Players will retain all points accrued up to and including the 2002 Skol World Championships

2. All points won in 2002 will be added to that total.

3. In effect this means players who won points for an event in 2001 and go on to win further points at the same event in 2002 will retain both sets of points for that competition.

4. In 2003, at the anniversary of tournaments played in 2001 players will lose points gained in those competitions. They will however retain points won in 2002, which will be added to any points won in the same competition in 2003. Therefore players will keep tournament points for a rolling period of two years.

5. This system will apply to every tournament including premier TV events and the World Championships.

6. All points gained in every tournament will now count towards a players total and not simply the best nine results as had been the case. Please note that this is merely a summary of the new system.

PDC Ranking System

1. ELIGIBILITY:
1.1 Any player who qualifies for a PDC event through the ranking system must join the PDPA should he wish to compete in any further PDC events. Any player who does not join the PDPA having competed in a PDC event will not be eligible to be considered for any subsequent PDC event until he does join the PDPA.

1.2 Any player who is not in good financial or disciplinary standing with the PDC or the PDPA will not be invited to participate in any event until such time as they are in good standing.

1.3 All players must sign and accept the PDC Code Of Conduct before being allowed to participate in any PDC organised event.

2. RANKING SYSTEM:
2.1 There will be five categories of tournament namely:

1st 2nd 3rd/4th 5th/8th 9th/16th 17th/32nd 33rd/64th
World Champions 50 40 35 30 24 16 See Note 1
Premier 30 24 20 16 12 8 See Note 1
One 16 12 10 8 6 4 2
Two 8 6 4 3 2 1 -
Three 8 4 3 2 1 - -

Note 1 -
It is the intention of the PDC Board to enlarge the number of players in the World Championship. However, if there is a qualifier for this, points will be awarded to those players who do not reach the final 32 on a basis to be determined. There will be qualifiers for the two other PDC wholly owned and staged events, again points for non qualifiers will be awarded on a basis to be determined.
The classification for each event will be based on the following:

World Championships - the PDC World Championship held in December / January will be the only event able to offer this level of points

Premier -Events which have live television coverage and a minimum prize fund of £50,000.

All other events will be Ranked at the discretion of the PDC Board, following consultation with the PDPA. Ranking will be based on tournament formats, seedings used as well as prize money levels. The PDC Board will have final power of veto over the Ranking list. Any additional overseas tournaments staged by the PDC will be Ranked at the discretion of the PDC Board again after consultation with the PDPA.

2.2 All tournaments count towards a players score in the Ranking List.

2.3 The points scored by a player at the end of the 2001/2 Skol World Championship are the starting point for the year 2002, and these points are those determined by the PDC Ranking List in operation during 2001. From this point any further points won during 2002 will be added to this.
At the start of 2003 BOTH these points totals will form the basis of the Ranking List. When the anniversary (meaning calendar date) of the points won during 2001 is reached, these points will be removed.
Points won during 2003 will be added to a players total as they are won.

2.4 The tournaments ranked in 2002 will be as per list published on www.planetdarts.co.uk. Provisional ranking lists may be issued from time to time for information only.

2.5 An official Ranking List will be issued after every PDC Ranked Event, this will be published on the PDC website. The Ranking List will also be sent to every PDPA Member through the monthly PDC Newsletter.

2.6 Invitations and seedings to events will be based on the Ranking List, which is in operation, 30 days prior to the start date of that tournament.
Invitations and seedings for The World Match Play, The World Grand Prix and The World Championships will be based on the Ranking List according to the following criteria:
The World Match Play the Ranking List at 31st May 2002; The World Grand Prix the Ranking List at 5th August 2002. The World Championship the Ranking List at 30th November 2002. The structure of these events is as follows:
World Championship - It is the intention to expand the field so the Top 32 players are seeded. Full details will be provided in due course.
There will be a minimum of 16 seeds for this event. World Match Play - Top 28 players in PDC Ranking List at 31/5/02.
The remaining places are op
en to qualifiers. The top 16 players will be seeded.
World Grand Prix - Top 24 players in the PDC Ranking List at 4/8/02. The remaining places are open to qualifiers, 6 from John Barras related competitions (it is intended that these will include 2 PDPA qualifiers but this has to be finalised with the sponsors), one from a Northern Ireland competition and one from a Republic of Ireland competition.
The top 8 players will be seeded.

2.7 Any ties in positions for seeding or invitation will be decided in the following way. a) The player who has assimilated the most points over the previous four ranking events will be given seniority. b) In the event of a further tie the number of tournaments taken into account will rise from four to five or however many tournaments which may be needed for the separation of players.

2.8 The PDC reserves the right to remove any tournament from the ranking list without prior notice.

2.9 The PDC reserves the right to add any tournament to the ranking list providing it gives at least three months notice of such an addition. Any PDC wholly owned and staged events can be added at the discretion of the Board.

2.10 The PDC reserves the right to have the benefit of all decisions in any event not covered fully in these rules.

2.11 The PDC reserves the right to add or amend any or all of these Rules at any time to meet any purpose deemed to be necessary at that time by the Board of Directors.

2.12 This document will remain in force until 7th January 2003 3. SEEDINGS

Top 32 play a straight knock out, 1 vs 32, 2 vs 31 etc If there are less than 128 entries then play down as appropriate.
