"Notts Do Enough To Earn Promotion With a Little Help From Their Friends"
The Nottinghamshire Darts Organisation Squad traveled to Exeter on the weekend of 23rd / 24th April 2005 to be entertained by Devon in theKaliber Inter County Darts Championship, knowing that a 19-17 win would guarantee them promotion to Division 2.
In a worse case scenario an 18-18 draw could still see them go up. Saturday started with the Ladies 'B' obtaining a 3-3 draw with Sheila Sellars from Long Eaton Ladies returning to play after a confidence boosting break, and managing to get the match award with an average of 15.68. This was the start of a pattern that is unprecedented in darts and was to set a trend of nervous darts by all players. Devon knew that a 20-16 win by their players would see them overtake Nottinghamshire and possibly earn them promotion, something that as dart player we all yearn for. After the Ladies came the Men's 'B', which was also a tight affair and they to drew 6-6 with Alan Draycott from Hucknall Nomads throwing a respectable 26.80 per dart to take the Match award. This left the score finely poised at 9-9 for the day and only a shoehorn could separate the two teams, On the Sunday morning, with the rain pouring down as it had done all weekend the Ladies 'A' started poor with Notts going 2-0 down and it looked like Devon were going to rain on Nottinghamshire's parade but the ladies rallied round as they have all season to boost their players and going into the last leg the score was 3-2 to the hosts with Notts requiring to win for a draw.
Up stepped Julie Robinson from the Ladies Super-league Champions team Calverton and play her best match of the season and earn yet another 3-3 draw, and earn Julie the match award with a very good 19.52 average. By this stage the whistles were blowing and the Notts players were dancing in the isles as nobody could see Notts Men's 'A' team losing. Was there going to be yet another twist to this match, and would the Devon Men deny Notts the promotion that they have fought for for many years and also deny the Men's 'A' the 'A' League title. After the first 6 games it was 3-3 with Notts players losing with 26 and 27 plus averages, Notts were the first to get to 17, needing only 2 points from 3 games after Dave King from Clipstone hit an impressive 27.93 average and took the men's match award. It was 18-17 to Notts and up stepped the Men's Captain to see the season out.
Unfortunately Captain Kirk hit a Klingon on the starboard bow and left the weekend a well deserved 18-18 draw and the Notts players were seen frantically searching for their mobile phones to phone other Counties to try and obtain results that would either seal their promotion or send them home dejected. As luck would have it Derbyshire lost to Bedfordshire which gave Nottinghamshire promotion to division 2 which set the whistles blowing, but what was the score in the match between Northamptonshire and West Midlands, the only other team that could deny the Men's 'A' of the title. It was a while before the information made its way back that West Midlands had only managed a 6-6 draw too and that gave the Men from Notts the title.
Well done to all players and officials who have worked hard too achieve what Notts have sought after for such a long time. Special thanks must be extended to both Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire for the help they have given Notts in obtaining the results they did against opposition that would have upset the party given the chance. As fixtures secretary I am very proud to have been part of a team that has fought hammer and tongues all season and got their just deserves. From all of the Committee THANKS and well done.
